Project of the Northern Forum «Enhancing ecosystem services through ecosystem restoration as part of climate change adaptation»

and  

Project «Restoring Peatlands in Russia for fire prevention and climate change mitigation (PeatRus)» 

Conducting joint  Workshop "Restoring nature ecosystems and ecosystem services for сlimate change mitigation and adaptation. Experience on the restoration of the peatland, mire, and wetland ecosystems."

The workshop goal to inform the stakeholders on the experience of the restoration of the wetlands ecosystems as the approach to climate change mitigation and adaptation. The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration aims to prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent and in every ocean. It can help to end poverty, combat climate change and prevent mass extinction.

The following topics will be discussed:

  • Goals, objectives, principles, and mechanisms of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration
  • Role of the ecosystem restoration projects in the climate change mitigation and adaptation measures
  • How you can contribute to the ecosystem restoration projects
  • How to organize such projects in the different ecosystems and under the various climatic conditions
  • What is specific about the projects on restoring hydrological regime in peatlands
  • The opportunity that Northern Forum provides for expertise exchange on ecosystem restoration in the Arctic
  • What you should know about the tundra ecosystems restoration: planning, design, implementation, monitoring, and communication
  • How to develop a monitoring design to address important climate questions for projects on restoring various ecosystems, from the forested steppe to the tundra
